What Is Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery?
While Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are best known for extracting wisdom teeth, our scope of practice includes everything from reconstructing faces affected by trauma to surgically correcting misaligned jaws to the placement of dental implants and facial rejuvenation. Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons specialize in the surgical and related treatment of diseases, injuries and deformities involving both the functional and esthetic aspects of the head, mouth, face, teeth, gums, neck and jaws. The specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery requires 4 to 6 additional years of hospital-based surgical, medical and anesthesia training after graduation from an accredited Dental School. In addition, the surgeons of NOVA OMS are Diplomates of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Board Certification in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is only obtained after passing a thorough written qualifying examination and a rigorous oral certifying examination.
