No one wants to have a gap in their smile. It can be inconvenient, uncomfortable, and even embarrassing. Understandably, you may be eager to get a dental implant as soon as possible after a tooth extraction. But how long exactly will you have to wait? That depends on a few factors. This blog post discusses potential timelines for tooth replacement following extractions.
Immediate Implant Placement
Under ideal circumstances, a dental implant can be placed at the site of a missing tooth right away. In fact, it is sometimes possible during the same appointment as the tooth extraction! This might be an option for you if your jawbone is strong and you are free of gum disease.
One special type of immediate implant placement is part of the All-on-4 procedure. During a single appointment, your remaining natural teeth can be removed, implants can be placed, and you can receive a beautiful temporary denture to go on top of them.
Early Implant Placement
Early dental implant placement may also be called “immediate-delayed implant placement.” It usually happens 2 – 3 months after extractions. This waiting period gives your gums the opportunity to heal. If you had infections before your extractions, waiting also gives your body time to fight off unwanted bacteria. Because this treatment timeline is fairly fast, it usually does not involve the need for a bone graft to strengthen and enlarge the jawbone.
Delayed Implant Placement
Delayed implant placement occurs at least 3 months after an extraction. This option is usually recommended for people who suffered significant damage to their oral tissues, perhaps because of advanced gum disease. It might involve a bone graft or other procedures to prepare your mouth to support your new teeth.
Tips for Avoiding Unnecessary Delays
To minimize unnecessary delays in your tooth replacement journey, you should:
- Talk to your dentist or oral surgeon. Let them know you are interested in dental implants so they can start planning the details of your procedure. You can speak to them even before your extraction appointment.
- Manage your oral and overall health. Gum disease, uncontrolled diabetes, and other health conditions can interfere with your candidacy for dental implants.
- Do not smoke. Smoking can greatly impact your oral health and, in some cases, it negatively affects candidacy for dental implants.
Your dental team does not want you to have an incomplete smile for any longer than necessary! Book a consultation to learn more about what your treatment timeline might look like.
