Extracted tooth in forceps Every tooth is invaluable for a healthy, functional smile. Generally, your dentist will do everything they can to ensure each tooth lasts for a lifetime. However, sometimes removing a tooth or two is necessary to save a smile overall. Recommending tooth extraction isn’t a decision your dentist makes lightly. Instead, here are 5 situations when the benefits of removing a tooth outweigh the potential disadvantages.

1. Irreparable Tooth Damage

Delaying dental treatment can cause irreversible damage to your tooth, like an infection or severe decay. Typically, a root canal can be used to remove decay and infection from a tooth, saving it from needing to be removed. Unfortunately, there can come a point when a root canal is no longer an option if treatment has been delayed. As a result, extraction is the best solution.

2. Advanced Periodontal Disease

Gingivitis is the earliest form of gum disease, which is an infection caused by bacteria in plaque and tartar buildup. Red, swollen, and bleeding gums are easy to treat with prompt care. If the infection is allowed to progress, it can lead to advanced periodontitis, which can affect the periodontal ligaments and the alveolar bone. The tooth will eventually loosen and fall out. Extracting the tooth allows oral health to be restored sooner by stopping the infection.

3. Impacted Tooth

A tooth can be partially or fully trapped beneath the gum tissue or in the jawbone, which most often happens with wisdom teeth. If the tooth isn’t removed, it can lead to several issues, like infections, overcrowding, cysts, and damage to surrounding teeth.

4. Orthodontics

Braces can create a straight, healthy smile, but there may not be enough room in a patient’s mouth to accomplish what is needed. Extracting specific teeth can allow overcrowding to be resolved. Not only does this create a beautiful smile and balanced bite, but it also reduces the risks of cavities and gum disease because straight teeth are easier to keep clean.

5. After an Accident

Restorative dental treatments can repair various issues that can result from accidents or injuries, like chips and cracks. Unfortunately, some damage may be beyond repair. Removing the tooth and replacing it with a prosthetic can restore a healthy, attractive smile.

Depending on your situation, your dentist may recommend replacing the extracted tooth with a prosthetic, like a dental implant, bridge, or partial denture. Rest assured, your dentist will only recommend treatments that are in the best interest of your oral health and overall wellness.
